An exciting new opportunity for Music Students!

Now available --- Friends of Music Community Service Credit!

Every student at Needham High School must complete two, 30-hour community service projects to satisfy the Community Classroom Learning Program graduation requirements.  However, music has never been well represented in this program because it is difficult to accumulate 30 hours of credit on a single music project.

FOM has worked with Mrs. Gretchen Ayoub (coordinator of the CCLP) to come up with a "FOM Community Service" umbrella with this goal:  To share your musical talents with the community outside of NHS.

Fermata Nowhere is an all-female a cappella group at Needham High School. It is the only group at NHS that is not audition-based; any NHS girl who likes to sing can join! The group rehearses on Friday mornings at 7 AM in the NHS Chorus room and performs at A Cappella Go! in November, Vocal Support in March, and other events in the Needham community during the year.  Any questions can be sent to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Students Acting to Make a Difference - SAMD

E-mail Print PDF

This student activity was started in 2007 by a group of students who wanted to used their love of musical theater to do good in the community. Each fall, 75+ cast and crew members perform a musical and donate the proceeds to a charity selected by the students. To date, SAMD has donated over $20,000. Sign-ups for auditions are announced in the spring at NHS and Pollard. Rehearsals begin in September and the show is performed November.

Past shows include: 2007 Grease, 2008 Into the Woods, 2009 Anything Goes, 2010 Thoroughly Modern Millie, 2011 Footloose, 2012 West Side Story.

Some past charities supported by SAMD include: Joplin High School Theater Arts Program, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Needham Coalition for Suicide Prevention, and New England Center for Homeless Veterans.

"Thank you so much for your donation of $8000. It was so wonderful that you used your theatrical talents to support rebuilding the theatre program of the Joplin Schools! We are touched by your generous hearts. On behalf of our students, teachers and staff - Thank You!"  Sincerely, Joplin Schools
