Marching Band Events

Marching Band & Color Guard is an exciting and enthusiastic group that creates a strong community among its members. Participants learn music, field drills, and flag work that is performed in the half-time show at varsity football games and as pep music played in the stands. Marching Band also performs in competitions, at special events, and at parades. Music or dance experience is great but not required. Students may choose to learn  a new instrument for Marching Band. In the fall, rehearsals are two weekday afternoons (typically Mondays and Wednesdays) and Saturdays, with a pre-season camp the week before school starts. The annual highlight is performing during the oldest Thanksgiving Day football rivalry in the country where Needham plays against Wellesley.

Marching Band is a wonderful opportunity to quickly make new friends in grades 8-12, enjoy music, and have fun! NHS Marching Band Under New Leadership

Mr. Paul Geresy has been named the new director of the NHS Marching Band. He has much experience and expertise as a private instructor of percussion and as the NHS Marching Band drum line instructor over the past three years.

Students are encouraged to consider joining the Needham High School Marching Band.  It is a great musical activity with a fantastic group of people, and it is also a way to be involved with the community via parades and other events. To read Mr. Geresy's introductory letter and to learn more about his vision for Marching Band, click here.  FOM thanks Gerry Gagnon for his years of committment to the Marching Band and wishes him the best in his new position at Newton South HS.

Marching Band Camp

E-mail Print PDF

Get ready for football season! The Annual Marching Band Camp Week is typically held the last full week of August before classes are scheduled to begin. All students participating in Marching Band and Color Guard should plan to attend Marching Band Camp. Bring your instrument and comfortable shoes, as we'll be playing and learning new formations! You are welcome to try out a new instrument in Marching Band and you don’t need to be taking a band class or audition to join this fun group.

The first day of camp is geared toward new and prospective members, the rookies, and includes a focus on the fundamentals of marching. Seasoned Marching Band members will greet you, provide an orientation, introduce the music, and teach the basics of marching and formations. Any student considering joining Marching Band this year should be sure to attend Rookie Day.

The location is NHS Memorial Field (meet at the gazebo) or NHS Band Room if it rains. The NHS Friends of Music hosts a barbeque lunch for students at the end of the week. Please check the website for updated information or contact Drum Major, Tim O'Connor. You can also contact director This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
